Both Sacramento and Elk Grove are looking to bring soccer teams to their cities.

A group of investors led by Warren Smith – one of the entrepreneurs who brought the River Cats to Sacramento – has reportedly purchased a professional soccer franchise for play here beginning in 2014, according to an article on the Sacramento Business Journals‘ website.

The article says the partners purchased the expansion team within the United Soccer League in hopes of eventually converting it to a Major League Soccer team.
