The Supreme Court has begun debating whether or not legally married same-sex couples in the United States are eligible for the same benefits under federal law as heterosexual married couples, according to an article on LATimes.com.

According to the article, part of the debate includes the Defense of Marriage Act of 1996 that says the federal government will recognize only marriages between a man and a woman.

There are reportedly 130,000 legally married gay couples in the United States as currently nine states and the District of Columbia allow same-sex couples to marry.
