“The Next Genderation: Unlocking The Full Potential of Women in the Workplace” hosted by Professional Business Women of California (PBWC), May 23, 2013 in San Francisco was an inspiring and empowering experience for women. The speakers and vendors spoke to interests of women in technology, health, education, fashion, employment and services. Speakers Sheryl Sandberg, COO, Facebook, Jennifer Granholm, former Governor of Michigan, Lareina Yee, Partner, McKinsy & Company, and PBWC Founder, Congresswoman Jackie Speier provided practical tactics and context for why women must achieve leadership positions. Strategies to retain women in leadership such as matching women with top accounts, board member cultivation, part-time work, and extended maternity leave are often advanced by women but benefit all. Nearly 4,000 conference attendees learned about these strategies, that women’s advancement into leadership has flattened at 14%, and attended 10 workshops on moving forward. The kind of vision, networking, and professional development skills gained by participants at the conference is needed regularly to propel women to higher levels of leadership. PBWC is smart in addressing this need through their support of Lean In Circles, small groups that meet regularly to learn skills and share successes, to continue the development of women leaders beyond the conference.
