How Would You Spend $500,000 in North Sac?

Community News from the City of Sacramento and Councilmember Sean Loloee:

Dear Friends,

I wanted to take a moment to share additional information on Sacramento’s Participatory Budgeting Pilot Program, as well as upcoming community meetings on the topic. This email also serves as a reminder for the upcoming Community Conversation, which will take place in-person on April 21 at the Roberts Family Development Center.

Participatory Budgeting in Sacramento

Sacramento is launching its first Participatory Budgeting process! Participatory Budgeting is a democratic process in which community members directly decide how to spend part of a public budget by proposing ideas, developing proposals, and voting on projects.

For this first round of funding, the Measure U Committee decided to prioritize two geographic areas, in the NE and SE parts of the City. Projects must service one of these two areas, and residents of these two areas will vote on their top projects to decide how to spend half of the total funds, or $500,000, each. Submit YOUR idea for how to spend the money by filling out the form at the link and you may see it built. You can also find more information and an online version of the idea submission here.

About the Process

  • April 11 – May 22: Community members brainstorm and propose project ideas at idea collection events, online, and in idea boxes around the City. Ideas can be anything from “new benches in our neighborhood park” to “a cross walk would make it safer to walk in my neighborhood” – it can be a variety of ideas!
  • May 23 – July 24: Community members work with City staff and develop full proposals.
  • August 1 – August 31: Residents in NE and SE Sacramento who live in the focus neighborhoods will vote on which proposals to fund and implement.
