Various law enforcement departments in the Sacramento area are taking part in a nationwide Prescription Drug Take-Back Day headed up by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) on this Saturday, April 28.
The purpose of the event is to collect leftover prescription medications that end up in home medicine cabinets and are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. A press release issued by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department says rates of prescription drug abuse in the US are increasing at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Plus many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medications, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away, both potential safety and health hazards.
This day is for the collection of any medicines in capsule and tablet form. Intravenous solutions, injectables, and needles will not be accepted. Illicit substances such as marijuana or methamphetamine are not a part of this initiative.
