The Sacramento Police Department (SPD) would like to remind the community to safeguard their homes during the upcoming summer months, according to an official press release.

The SPD says while going to bed with your windows and doors open may help cool down your home at night, it is often an invitation for unwanted and unexpected intruders. Burglars are opportunitists and are looking for homes with easy and quiet access, and the SPD says they’ve been known to striked even when you are at home, sometimes taking items while you are asleep.

Additionally, the SPD reports they have seen an increase in nighttime burglaries to second story apartments, specifically in the South Natomas area.

Many times residents get a false sense of security due to their elevated location, and the SPD says although these latest incidents have been centralized, it is a good reminder for everyone to stay safe and practice good habits like closing all windows and doors before going to bed and ensuring locks are securely fasteneed.
