Black Girls Rock 2011 Awards, taped Oct. 15 in NYC (aired 11/6 on BET), proved performances can make an award show. Hosted by Actresses Tracee Ellis Ross and Regina King.  This year’s Black Girls Rock introduced us to newbie songstress Elle Varner and took us down memory lane with a few legends such as Mary J. Blige and Erykah Badu. “Icon” Award ~ Angela Davis, the original fist-pumping diva with the famous ‘fro and strong message of Black empowerment has galvanized millions to make a change.

“Star Power” Award ~ Taraji P. Henson, Academy Award-nominated actress

“Young, Gifted & Black” Award  ~ Tatyana Ali, one of America’s favorite child stars of “Fresh Prince of Bel Air” and now a Harvard School graduate

“Trailblazer” Award ~ Imani Walker and Malika Saada who are advocating for dignity and policy reform. These women break down barriers and stand on the frontlines of the fight for justice every day.
