How cheap is it to fly this month? Almost impossibly cheap. I went on my airfare search site, FareCompare.com, earlier this week and found a $35 fare from Los Angeles to Fort Lauderdale. That’s $35 round-trip, mind you, and a non-stop flight. It was offered by multiple U.S. carriers.
Did these super-deals sell out? All I can tell you is, $35 tickets were still available the next day which means the vast majority of us won’t or cannot fly.
Oh, sure, some will fly and some have to. But according to the Transportation Security Administration, a record-low 97,000 people were screened at airports on Tuesday, half the number from two weeks ago and a far cry from the 2.1 million travelers on the same week day a year ago.
So when can we fly? I get asked that again and again, and the answer is probably not for several weeks for most of us. Then I get asked if all the super-deals will go away when COVID-19 does. The answer to that one is no. Or at least fares won’t rise much, because airlines will use them as incentives to lure us back into the habit of getting on planes. So for now, we wait, but there are some things you can do now to get ready for a future trip and maybe save even more.
