While 2017 didn’t quite produced the same amount of Oscar caliber films that the previous year had when Moonlight, Hidden Figures, Fences, and 13 were in the mix, it still had some films that made an impact on the industry. Not only did 2017 have three Black filmmakers who had films that grossed over $100M at the box office, but we also saw a record amount (6) of Black female directors who had feature length films distributed by a studio or major independent label.
