The Sacramento Police Department (SPD) recently announced that now 10,000 Sacramento residents are using the social media platform Nextdoor to communicate with their neighbors and directly with police in an effort to keep their neighborhoods safe.

The SPD launched its partnership with Nextdoor about six months ago. According to the SPD, over 85 percent of Sacramento neighborhoods are represented and neighborhood watch groups have increased over 300 percent.

Nextdoor allows Sacramento neighbors to connect online and join neighborhood watch programs. The SPD says neighbors that know each other and communicate with each other tend to watch out for one another, which creates safer neighborhoods. The partnership also allows the police department to communicate directly with neighbors and to share crime and safety information in specific geographic areas, as opposed to sending out information citywide.
