Thirteen African-American high school students, representing Alameda, Contra Costa and San Francisco Counties, have been selected to participate in the first Northern California delegation of the China-U.S. Study Exchange Foundation (CUSEF) — “Think. China 2013.”

The delegation will travel to Beijing and Shanghai on a cross-cultural academic, civic, business and service-oriented tour from July 13-17, 2013. The objectives of “Think China” is to inspire global learning and strengthen relations between the Chinese and African Americans.

According to a press release by the East Oakland Youth Development Center (EOYDC), seven young women and six young men make up the delegation, with the average age being 16. The majority of these students have never traveled abroad. In preparation for the trip, the delegation has participated in a series of pre-travel leadership training activities, including an introduction to Chinese history and culture, public policy, professional development, and team building.

Regina Jackson, president and CEO of EOYDC, is the lead chaperone for “Think China.” Fellow chaperons include Coach Nola Turnage of 100 Black Men of the Bay Area, and Nicka Smith of NS2 Photography and Alameda County, CA Youth Ancestral Project.
