Robert F. Brookins, a Sacramento native and former musical director/co-lead vocalist of the hit group Earth Wind & Fire, passed away four (4) years ago April 15, 2009 but left a musical legacy many would be envious of. Born and raised in Del Paso Heights, an alumni of Grant Union High School, made music his life’s pursuit and passion, reaching the musical apex for 10 years with the world’s biggest Black R&B/Pop music group. His music Discography is one to be admired, from writing producing performing and collaborating with some of the industries finest such as: Nancy Wilson, Kim Bassinger, Dale Bozzio, The Jackson’s Janet and Jackie Jackson, The Whispers, Bobbi Brown and many many more, (google his name and you will be amazed at what can and did come out of Del Paso Heights, that was extremely POSITIVE! In his memory, Robert’s family created a foundation (RBMC) which provides arts to under-served schools. Michael Brookins introduces the guitar to elementary students at clinics he hosts in the Del Paso Heights neighborhoods which included “Guitar Day” Let’s learn to play on Fri-4/16 at North Avenue Elementary with guitar lessons by Mr. Richard Nance (professional guitarist). The class consisted of: 1) Zumba warm ups; 2) Robert Brookins history; 3) Making of a cereal box guitar; 4) Sounds of the guitar (Rock, Jazz, Soul); 5) Sing-a-long (kids favorite theme songs); 6) Strum the LIVE guitar line (all kids); 7) Guitar picture coloring contest (best picture wins a guitar); 8) How to make a cereal box guitar instruction sheet (take home).
The 4th Annual Robert Brookins Memorial Celebration will be held on June 1, 2013 commemorating Black Music Month Artists that formerly worked with Robert Brookins stop by an pay tribute by performing Robert’s music as a tribute to his legacy. Past artists included Stephanie Mills, George Duke, Derrick (DOA) Allen, and Verdean White (Earth, Wind & Fire). This year’s celebration is expected to bring a few surprise guests.
