The Sac Cultural Hub family is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Pastor Bishop Sherwood C. Carthen of Bayside of South Sacramento church.

Carthen was 54 and had been in ministry for 34 years. According to an email sent out by Bayside of South Sacramento (BOSS), in 2004 Carthen started the church, attracting thousands of people to his services. He was also a community activist, engaging city officials, businesses, and faith-based communities to partner together to bring hope to the Sacramento region.

“This is a very sad time for the Greater Sacramento Valley Community amd beyond, as Pastor Carthen touched literally thousands of lives,” says Pleshette Robertson, CEO and founder of the Sacculturalhub.com Media Company. “I personally loved seeing Pastor Carthen at Another Looks Beauty & Barber Salon in South Sacramento. He was such a celebrity by sight, but yet very funny and such an easy normal person to talk to.”

Robertson also was personally able to reach out to Carthen during her “most emotional and person/family challenges” and he was there to “advise and counsel with no judgement.”

Pastor Carthen was also a great supporter and advocate of SacCulturalHub.com and THE HUB Magazine, as well as various community events. He acted as MC/Host/Moderator for our Sacramento Community Book Discussion at Underground Books in 2010, and was the MC/Host of the Men’s Perspective Panel at the Exceptional Woman of Color (EWOC) conference in 2012. He was also a contributing writer for THE HUB Magazine, contributing spiritual and uplifting articles.

Our prayers and deepest condolences go out to Pastor Carthen’s beautiful wife, Charlene, and his entire family. The immediate presence of Bishop Carthen will surely be missed, but he will be forever remembered for his great ministry and his jovial spirit!
