African Americans are more at risk for kidney failure than any other race, according to the American Kidney Fund (AKF).

According to the AKF, more than 1 in 3 kidney failure patients — over 150,000 people — in the US are African-American due to a high risk of diabetes and high blood pressure, as well as limited access to healthcare.

So how can you help prevent kidney disease? The AKF offers these tips:

  • Get tested
  • Eat right
  • Live healthy
  • Manage diabetes and high blood pressure
