Review – Lefty’s Taproom

By Michael P Coleman

I had driven by Lefty’s Taproom 1,000 times. Well, maybe not 1,000. But a lot. Enough times to kinda know where it was before I even got there. And the place exudes that vibe, too…you feel like you’ve been there before.

I’d taken a walk first before stopping for lunch on a recent Saturday, as it was the first sunny weekend we’d had in a while and I wanted to take advantage of that. That was a mistake: while I was walking, a biking group had rolled up, jumped in line, and ponied up to the bar ahead of me. By the time it was my time to order food and beverages, I was ravenous. But the wait was more than worth it.

For starters, Lefty’s offers a hefty variety of taps. The Ghost Town Hericide (an IPA), the Towns Bad Apple, and Nitty’s Saturday Night (ciders) are not to be missed. Of the ciders, I preferred Bad Apple as it was a little more tart. In the very near future, I’ll try some of the others, and will tell you all about them.

You’re welcome. I’m a giver.

Lefty’s wings are bomb, but get whichever sauce you choose on the side. (I went with the fairly hard to mess up BBQ.) I think you get a little more of it that way, and you don’t wind up with sticky sauce gumming up your wings. And the veggie burger was more than serviceable.

If you’re looking for a truly spicy chicken sandwich, you can bypass the chains altogether and head over to Lefty’s. The delicious, ample grilled chicken breast on their sandwich is adorned with a good sized slice of ghost pepper cheddar, and pickled jalapeño, thank you Jesus! It’s at LEAST a four alarm affair! I’m kind of picky about my French fries but I really liked the ones that came with my sandwich, and they helped cool my mouth down.

Lefty’s prices are quite reasonable, and while their inside dining area is small, they have a spacious, partially covered patio where you can eat outside while enjoying our beautiful Sacramento weather.

But I digress. All of that talk about that spicy chicken sandwich just made me hungry, and glancing up at the clock, I see it’s just past Noon. I wonder whether Lefty’s delivers…
