Chadwick Boseman was heaped with plaudit upon plaudit for his portrayal of James Brown in last summer’s “Get On Up.” From the dancing to the smoothness to the PCP-fueled meltdowns, Mr. Boseman, who rose to fame with his portrait of Jackie Robinson in “42,” was heralded for singularly channeling the Godfather of Soul.

Mr. Boseman met up with the Bagger over tea at the Bowery Hotel, weeks before two interesting announcements — that the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, a stop on the awards-season trail, would be giving him a 2015 Virtuoso Award for his “Get On Up” performance and that he would be playing the Black Panther, a pioneering black superhero in comics, in Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War.”
