Without warning, Drake released the 17-song If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late on iTunes and other digital retailers one week ago, moving 495,000 copies in just over three days, according to Nielsen SoundScan’s weekly sales report released Wednesday.

Following the No. 1 debuts of Drake’s past three full-length efforts (including Nothing, which moved 658,000 its first week), this “speaks to the popularity of Drake and the interest that his fans have in his music, especially considering that this album hasn’t been positioned as a traditional studio album,” says Billboard‘s associate director of charts/sales Keith Caulfield. Whether you see it as an “unofficial album” or a “mixtape” (as Drake referred to it on Twitter), “selling this many copies in this day and age in such a short amount of time is pretty incredible.”
